Derek “D” Miller was born in Warren, MI and a proud graduate of Cousino High School, Michigan State University, and University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
Early Years: Derek had an undeniable work ethic from a young age. He did the landscaping of 5 homes on his childhood block. His first job was at 15 working at Randazzo’s Fresh Market. He had that job 3 years before joining his friend’s family business, the iconic Cibo’s Pizza in Warren. Deciding to follow his early passion for politics, Derek chose to attend MSU. While attending State, he worked at the State Capitol in Lansing, waited tables and bartended in East Lansing. After graduation, Derek returned home to save money, accepting a scholarship to attend the U of D. Derek found his passion at U of D traveling the Country with their Project Salute Program, servicing under-represented Veterans to help get them their Disability Benefits. “It was the only class experience in Law School where you actually were able to shake hands with a client, a hero and help them. I loved it,” declareD. Miller.

After graduating Law School during the Great Recession, Derek started his own law practice and assisted defendants across metro Detroit, many of which were court appointed because they lacked the finances to hire their own counsel. However, Miller quickly accepted a job at the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office in May of 2010. As an Assistant Prosecutor, he managed some of the busiest dockets in Macomb County, often times handling up to 50 cases per day. Derek was the Office Liaison to the Drug and Sobriety Courts, Deputy Chief of Senior Crimes Unit and a proud member of Lodge 124, Warren FOP.
In November of 2014, Miller was elected to the State House of Representatives at 31, serving the citizens of his hometown, Warren, and neighboring community, Center Line. He was named Assistant Floor Leader in his first term and served on the House Energy and Insurance Committees. While serving on those committees, Derek worked side by side with legislators from both political parties to hold the Public Service Commission accountable to all rate paying customers, not just corporations. He fought for transparency and protection of the Catastrophic Claims Fund to serve the victims of auto accidents in Michigan. Meanwhile, Miller continued his fight for victims by introducing a number of criminal laws to protect children and vulnerable adults.
In February of 2016, Miller was appointed as the Macomb County Treasurer. With thousands of citizens facing legal foreclosure, Derek went to work creating and implementing the new “Keep Macomb Your Home” marketing theme to get citizens the help needed to avoid foreclosure. He worked closely with financial experts to take advantage of market rates to expand the investment opportunities and dramatically increased return rates for the taxpayers. But he didn’t forget about those struggling! Miller worked closely with his alma mater, Michigan State, and partners in the community to coach those struggling with taxes, assisting them with financial literacy.
In January of 2017, Derek rejoined the Macomb County Prosecutors Office where he eventually became the Chief of Operations overseeing 60 attorneys adjudicating thousands of cases every year. He worked diligently to gain convictions on rapists, thieves, drug dealers and murderers to protect the streets of Metro Detroit.

In April of 2022 D. Miller went to work for UPS as a National Director of Business Development for their Subsidiary, Coyote Logistics. Coyote was the 3rd largest freight broker in North America. D. Miller navigated through complex supply chain strategies, economic forecasts, merger and acquisitions, safety and pricing concerns shipping cross border freight among our neighbors Mexico and Canada. Miller did this while guarding customers from volatile political pressures over fraud and tariffs during the Biden and Trump administrations, that otherwise could have disruptive impacts on routing guides. D. Miller, using his legal and strategy focused background, built relationships and brought significant value to customers, such as Amway, Flex-n-Gate, Inteva, Fisher Automotive, Matikon, The Macomb Group and Building Plastics, to name a few.
